He’s an expert in Air and Missile Defense Algorithms, Modeling, and Analysis, is making a significant impact by providing tutoring and educational support. How Jim Got Involved at His Way
Jim’s journey with His Way began in a unique way. He recounts, “I tagged along when my wife Greta interviewed for the Office Manager position. I told Bill Neiland that we were a package deal. He hired her anyway.” This would mark the beginning of a fulfilling volunteer experience.
Jim’s qualifications are impressive, and we are so blessed that Jim shares his knowledge with the His Way residents by tutoring in two crucial areas: math (for GED preparation) and financial skills. By imparting practical knowledge in these domains, he equips the residents with valuable tools for future success.
Why Education Is Important for Recovery
When we asked Jim why education is so important for recovery, he told us, “The pressures of life often drive people to (or back to) addiction. I kick off my financial skills class with a reminder that the goal is to help alleviate stress in that one aspect of the men’s lives and, as an added bonus, maybe enable them to one day help others financially as well as with their time, talents, and energy.”
For GED classes, he believes that obtaining a diploma not only enhances employment prospects but also challenges the negative self-perceptions that society imposes.
Witnessing the positive changes in the residents is both heartwarming and fulfilling for Jim. He observes, “Confidence, hope, and a lot of big smiles” emerge as men engage in educational programs. The idea of giving back becomes a reality as these men recognize their potential to contribute to society positively.
The Reward of Teaching
Jim cherishes the “light bulb” moments when concepts click for his students. “That makes sense,” they exclaim, a testament to the progress they’re making. However, the impact of education goes beyond comprehension; it translates into tangible outcomes like debt reduction and improved job prospects, which can change the course of their lives.
For Jim, the reward lies in witnessing the transformative process. He shares, “I just enjoy watching the process of the men slowly but steadily accepting the undeniable and overwhelming truth that there are those who love them, who care about them, and who want to see them reach their God-given potential.” It’s a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, and Jim plays a crucial role in facilitating it.

Jim’s advice is simple yet powerful, “Come to a His Way graduation and see.” Just as Philip (in John 1) invited Nathaniel to experience something extraordinary, Jim invites others to witness the transformation firsthand.
