Barry and Vicki Johnsons’ only child, Jeffrey, struggled with alcohol addiction, but in 2016 Jeffrey found hope and healing through His Way’s addiction recovery program.
Vicki recalled how the program greatly benefited Jeffrey, offering him a chance at a new life and a deeper relationship with God. Tragically, later that same year, Jeffrey passed away due to complications related to his alcohol use.
This heartbreaking loss fueled the Johnsons’ desire to help others and to create a support network for other families facing similar challenges.
Connecting with Others
When Jeffrey was a resident at His Way, Vicki remembered how she wanted to connect with other parents who were navigating the same difficult path. Recognizing the power of shared experiences and support, Barry and Vicki established the His Way Family Support Group, offering families with loved ones at His Way a safe space to connect, share their journeys, and find encouragement.
While the Johnsons are not licensed counselors, they have personal experience and understand the fears, struggles, and hopes of families dealing with addiction. Barry acknowledges that they don’t have all the answers, but their hearts are dedicated to being there for others on this difficult journey.
Finding Solace
Barry has observed the profound impact of addiction on families, noting the embarrassment and isolation that parents often feel. The Family Support Group provides a judgment-free environment where families can find solace and understanding among others who have walked similar paths.
“Dealing with a child who’s an addict, whether he’s in treatment or not, is hard.”
Barry Johnson, parent
A retired businessman and volunteer teacher at His Way, Barry speaks from the depths of his own experience. “When he was out of treatment, I dreaded the phone call that he was in jail or, worst case, the police showing up at our door to tell us he’d overdosed. Even while he was in treatment, I expected any day he might walk through the door because he had walked away from treatment, as he had done so many times before.”
Lightening the Load
The His Way Family Support Group aims to lighten the load by fostering a community where families can find understanding and support. It’s a place to meet others facing the same challenges, people you can walk alongside and call upon during difficult times.
The family support group meets the second Monday of each month from 6-7 p.m. at the Mercy Building at Twickenham Church of Christ.
