Written by Brenda Newman, Director of Business Operations at His Way
Sometime last year, a resident who was also an employee at The Saving Way ran into an old friend at the thrift store. He had not seen this friend in several years. From a few aisles over, I listened as the resident, Gary, explained that he was close to graduating from the program at His Way.
It was obvious that this friend was familiar with Gary’s troubled past as Gary proudly let them know how much better he was and why. He enthusiastically rattled off the many ways that His Way had helped him to form a new-found relationship with God.
He told her, “They helped me get my license reinstated, they helped me keep my daughter, and they helped me get my GED!”
Gary had been a good student but had dropped out of school at the young age of 14 to work in construction, thinking at the time that money was more important than education. Now at 35, he has finally finished what he started by passing all the tests necessary to obtain his GED while a resident at His Way. The impact of that accomplishment on his self-esteem can’t be overstated, as is plainly evident for all to see.
This Year’s Fundraising Dinner Theme
The theme of this summer’s fundraising dinner is education. Aptly named “The Next Chapter,” it will focus on the importance of education in changing the trajectory of a person’s life for the better. We strongly believe that education should be a component of any well-rounded and holistic approach to recovery, and it’s fundamental to our mission of restoring men to Christlike service in society.
For us, this starts on a resident’s first day and follows him through the entire program. His Way staff and volunteers teach a wide variety of classes every week on topics such as financial management, parenting and relationships, Biblical foundations, effective communication, and much more!
“His Way’s educational courses retrained my ability to learn, allowing me to pursue higher learning. Just the confidence instilled from bible tests alone helped my self-worth.”
Zack Miskelly, Graduate and Resident Manager at His Way Atlanta
More About the Event
We are honored to have Dr. Candice McQueen, President of Lipscomb University, as our guest speaker this year. Dr. McQueen has a servant’s heart, and she understands the value of education more than most.

We are proud of the many residents who have aspired to higher education while at His Way, and we’re excited to tell you about all of their accomplishments. But we are also excited to talk about others who have worked on foundational skills or vocational training to reintegrate into the workforce successfully.
His Way, in collaboration with our generous community partners, offers an array of educational programs, including GED classes and certification programs through Calhoun Community College, and construction skills training through the North Alabama Homebuilding Academy.
