When I was newly single at the age of 40, my dad was visiting from Michigan. On that trip, he went to Home Depot and bought me a tool bag and an assortment of basic tools to keep in the trunk of my car. There was a hammer, screwdrivers, some electrical tape, zip ties, and a few more items I might need in an emergency.
My dad always had a strong sense of what it means to be a man—providing for his family and stepping in to help when needed (although you were probably going to get yelled at first). Living so far from his daughter, he knew there might be times I’d need to handle things on my own. He couldn’t always be there in person, but he could make sure I had some basic tools. That bag was his way of saying, “You’re not completely alone. I’ve got you.”
You Are Loved
Now that he’s been gone from this earth for almost eight years, I still have that tool bag. It’s more than a collection of items—it’s a reminder of my dad’s love, care, and foresight. A physical symbol that I was known, and I was loved.
And it makes me think of how God loves us.
When Jesus knew He would soon leave His disciples, He also knew they might feel lost or unsure without Him. But He didn’t leave them unprepared or alone. He gave them a promise:
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” (John 14:18 (ESV))
That promise was fulfilled through the gift of the Holy Spirit and through His Word. God, like a loving Father, left us with tools—wisdom, guidance, comfort, and power. The Bible is more than a book; it’s our instruction manual, our encouragement, our connection to truth. And the Holy Spirit is our Helper, reminding us what is true, strengthening us when we feel weak, and guiding us when the path is unclear.
You Are Not Alone
Just like my dad couldn’t physically be there every time something broke or needed fixing, God knew we’d face moments when we’d need His help and presence in real-time. And so He gave us what we’d need to stand strong—not in our own strength, but with the tools He’s provided.
Every time I see that tool bag in my trunk, I smile at the memory of my dad’s care. And now, I also think of my Heavenly Father—who sees me, knows what I need, and has lovingly equipped me for the road ahead.
You are not alone. You were never meant to be.
